For the most part I shut down the comment section around the middle of last year. I had aspirations of building a community here when I first fired this site up ten years ago (the first two years it was called Wiz Speak). But to be honest, I didn't do much to cultivate community. It was a bit more vibrant back when I belonged to Rosa Say's Talking Story and later Joyful Jubilant Learning communities because all of the writers interacted with each other at their respective sites.
Sonia Simone articulates here why they are shutting down Copyblogger's comment section. I am relatively sure there isn't another Website in the universe that is clear, coherent and concise as Copyblogger. So I recommend reading why Sonia and her team is going forth with this experiment. I am pretty much doing the same thing with one exception, I'm not experimenting.
One of my intentions in the Pieces of Freedom series is to encourage conversation and build membership for each of my interviewees at their Facebook page. I also have a Pieces of Freedom Facebook page and will post stories there as well. For stories relating to Standing Out in a Sea of Sameness, conversation will be at its Facebook page. Depending upon the piece, I'll use my Google+ account for conversation too.
Finally, the other reason is I'm doing this is I'm tired of dealing with the spam and don't believe in making my readers screw around with Captcha or whatever Typepad is using.
