Brand You: Think About What You're Posting

I wanted to share the song No More Doggin by Colin James at Facebook. I usually link to a video from You Tube when I want to share a song. The reason I cannot share this video at Facebook is due to the violence. I do not want to promote violence in any shape or form.

Popular advice about what to post goes something like this: Don't post anything you wouldn't want your mother or grandmother to see. Even if they were alive, I'd not be concerned with them about this video. I'm more concerned with my neices, nephews and younger folks who I know have friended me. And not to mention potential employers connecting me with this type of violence.

 

I know what you're thinking. "Davo, you know this video is showing up on Facebook."

Yes I do. And now you know what I think about posting videos like this.

But man, what a great song!

Freshmen & Sophomore Alert! Career Portfolio's

Career portfolios are used to plan, organize and document education, work samples and skills  ---  Wikipedia

Students typically wait until late into their college careers to put résumés and portfolios together. They'll sit down and try to remember interesting educational achievements, work and volunteer experiences, skills and samples of work - if, they can remember where they put them.

As freshmen and sophomores, you have a huge advantage. Not only can you begin to organize this material now, you can influence it!

Imagine for a moment. You know right now what materials and experiences are desirable to future employers. For instance, you know that employers value volunteer work for reputable organizations. Do you think maybe you could carve out six hours a semester and log some volunteer work?

The point isn't so much to build a physical career portolio now, it is to do the stuff that you'll put into it.

Your Appearance

Does your appearance really matter? Will you work with customers, coworkers and business acquaintenances in person?

Check out this personal mantra:

I need to be free. I need people to accept me for who I am. I cannot deal with people who are influenced by the way I dress. I'm a good person and my long hair, body piercings and tattoos shouldn't matter to others. I need to do my own thing and if that doesn't agree with others then too bad.

Do you see a theme in this statement? It implies that this person comes first. Would you like to work with this person? Would you like this person working for you? How would a customer look at this person? How would this person get along with a manager? If a person places themself first, will he get what he needs from others?

Unfortunately, in the real world, people do not read the book of our heart and soul. Instead, they look at the cover and make a determination to read further or discard.

Unless you will live in a cave, on an island or behind the computer for the rest of your life, you will interact with people. And people will be a factor in getting what you need.

Bob, the hot dog vendor sells hot dogs. Due to life, he hasn't bathed in a month, worn clean clothes in over two months, has an uncontrollabe flatluence problem and has a runny nose that is slowly building a sand castle of crusted snot in his beard.

How many hot dogs will you order from Bob today?
