Okay, it's debatable whether or not Johnny is Johnny. In a strange way however, this isn't the point. The tbt* ran an editorial last week supposedly written by a local high school junior. Go here to read it along with the commentary that follows.
The student's message is about education. It is so poorly written that the majority of readers lose sight of the message and focus on the bad grammar and spelling. For a moment, let's pretend this was actually written by a student. He should be commended for taking the time to express his opinion! The problem is, no one heard or understood his message.
I am not sure there is anyone on the planet who loves the spirit of Gen Y'ers more than I do. They want to make a difference, give back and volunteer. And they seem to have this innate need to question status-quo, policies and authority*. I love it!
Dave's message to young people: If you want to be understood, understand. Understand that when you write you need to spell correctly and use good grammar.
Overall, you are an intelligent generation. They say that a sign of intelligence is to be able to hold two opposing thoughts in one's mind at the same time. Try these two:
Go ahead and keep texting and IMing, in the way that you do, to people you know.
When writing switch gears. Spell correctly and use good grammar.
Johnny really can write - when he tries...if this is really Johnny.
*Note to Dave's two Gen Y daughters: the questioning authority part does not pertain to you.
