"He was the wizard of a thousand kings,
and I chanced to meet him one night wandering..."
"misty morning, clouds in the sky
without warning, a wizard walks by
casting his shadow, weaving his spell
long grey cloak, twinkling bell..."
The roots of my infatuation with Wizards. Two separate songs, two separate artists. Any guesses as to who these artists might be?
My vision of the wizard is one of wisdom. He is a great historian capturing what once was; he mixes it in the cauldron of what is now and tells us through the crystal ball of what will be.
In the spring of 2001, I was having breakfast with Ellen Rohr in Columbus, Ohio. I described a project that I had in mind and without hestitaion Ellen said, "you have to check out the Wizard." What? Here is this prim and proper business woman telling me about wizards? I didn't elucidate on Dave's own little world of wizards, but I did go right out and buy the Wizard's book.
There are times in one's life when the universe casts aside her steadying hand, picks us up and points us into the direction of her choice. That spring was my time, the direction was Roy Williams the Wizard of Ads.
Roy Williams is a master storyteller. His books are packed with short essays on life, dreams, vision, reality, perception and advertising - to name a few. His ability to laser a noiseless, meaningful message is beyond approach and in fact, is exactly what he teaches us to do. If you are a human being, his work is meant just for you!
Roy Williams also writes one of the best e-mail newsletters in cyberspace. It is titled The Monday Morning Memo. The newsletter contains one short meaningful essay, delivered to your computer each Monday. Roy subtley imbeds the ax of awareness in everything else he has going on through and around this power packed message. As you read the Monday Morning Memo, think of how you might be able to tighten and simplify the buckshot pattern of your message.
